Former NRL player Trent Merrin charged with alleged $140,000 cryptocurrency theft

Former Kangaroos and Dragons forward Trent Merrin has been charged with stealing $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency after allegedly using deceptive means to transfer the funds from a victim’s account. Merrin, who retired from the NRL in 2021 after 250 first grade games, was arrested at his home in the Shellharbour region on Tuesday morning, one year after police began investigations into the alleged theft from a 29-year-old man’s cryptocurrency account. Merrin, 36, has been active in the cryptocurrency landscape since his retirement, describing himself online as a “cryptocurrency enthusiast” and a “dedicated entrepreneur and investor”. He has pursued a range of business ventures since his retirement, including starting a cold plunge therapy service, as part of a push into the booming health and wellness space.
