Former Lions interception leader signs deal with Ravens

According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, former Detroit Lions cornerback Amani Oruwariye is signing with the Baltimore Ravens. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The move comes as the Ravens deal with multiple injuries in their secondary, including four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro Marlon Humphrey and rookie defender Nate Wiggins.
Oruwariye, 28, will begin his seventh NFL season. Last year with the Dallas Cowboys, he appeared in seven games with four starts, recording 29 tackles — including one for loss — three passes defended, a fumble recovery and an interception.
The Lions selected the Penn State product in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. After a modest rookie season, he emerged as a key starter in Detroit’s secondary over the next two years. His best season came in 2021, when he tied for third in the league with six interceptions, along with 57 tackles, 11 passes defended and one fumble recovery.
That same year, opposing quarterbacks completed just 61% of passes when targeting him. Amid the Lions’ rebuild, Oruwariye was one of the few bright spots.
His 2022 campaign, however, was less successful. Oruwariye was benched during a Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots and saw his playing time reduced the rest of the season.
The Lions opted not to re-sign him the following offseason.
Since then, Oruwariye has had brief stints with the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. He signed with Tennessee in May but was released after failing to make the 53-man roster. The Titans briefly re-signed him to their practice squad in August before releasing him again.
Oruwariye will now aim to get his career back on track with the Ravens, who are thin with depth in their banged-up secondary.
