Former first responder announces 2025 Staten Island council campaign

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Earlier this month, former NYPD officer and retired FDNY firefighter John Shea officially launched his campaign for the New York City Council in Staten Island North Shore’s 49th District.
He was joined at his campaign launch event by Staten Island Republican Party Chairman and Assemblymember Michael Tannousis; Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa; Congressmember Nicole Malliotakis; Assemblymember Sam Pirozzolo; Assemblymember Mike Reilly; and Councilmember Frank Morano.
As an NYPD officer, Shea responded to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and worked at Ground Zero during the recovery efforts. Later, he served as a firefighter with the FDNY on Staten Island.
“Once again, I feel called to serve my neighbors and community,” Shea said. “As a police officer, firefighter, husband, and father, I know firsthand the challenges Staten Islanders face.”
The North Shore resident said his campaign and leadership would focus on supporting law enforcement, fighting to change bail laws, prioritizing quality education, and easing the financial burdens on families and small businesses.
“Throughout his career, John has shown unwavering leadership and commitment to Staten Island’s North Shore,” praised Tannousis at the campaign event. “He stepped up during our city’s most challenging moments and has always answered the call to serve his neighbors.”
Shea’s candidacy is a new opportunity for Republicans to strengthen their presence in the New York City Council and the North Shore of Staten Island. However, if elected, Shea promises to represent all, “from Rosebank to Mariners Harbor,” regardless of party affiliation.
The November election ballot for the 49th District will list Shea on the Republican line, incumbent Kamillah Hanks on the Democratic line, and community organizer Sarah Blas on the Working Families Party line and as an independent candidate under “New North Shore.”
