A former First Literacy scholar turned general surgery resident physician will be the keynote speaker at the organization’s Innovation in Adult Basic Education event on Friday. Dr. Vitalis Osuji of UMass Chan Medical School will speak about his experience as an adult learner and the challenges he overcame to become a doctor, according to a statement released by First Literacy. First Literacy is a nonprofit that supports adult education and literacy, including English for speakers of other languages, or ESOL. The event will take place at Bunker Hill Community College from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Various educational programs that have received grants from First Literacy will also present resources and initiatives during the event, the statement said. Advertisement Programs include Casserly House, which developed curriculum for ESOL; Charlestown Adult Education Center, which created a diversion program for first-time offenders: Criminal Justice Organization of Hampden County, which launched a mother/child reading program; Mujeres Unidas Avanzando, which developed a class for people taking a high school equivalency exam; Community Learning Center, which created a leadership program; and The Literacy Project, which researched a rural adult education program. Since 2014, First Literacy has awarded more than $6 million to support innovative literacy programs throughout Massachusetts, the statement said.
