Former Browns QB, South Carolina star released from hospital after health scare

Former South Carolina Gamecocks star and Cleveland Browns quarterback Connor Shaw has been released from the hospital after collapsing at his son’s football game, according to reports.
Shaw, who turned 34 on Friday, was released from the hospital on Saturday, The State reports. He was hospitalized Wednesday after he collapsed while coaching his son’s youth football game in South Carolina.
He was given CPR at the scene and transported to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was in stable condition in the medical ICU as of Saturday morning.
The game Shaw was coaching in was part of the Simpsonville Recreation Department in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
Chad Smith, a resident of Upstate Carolina, said he was coaching a 10U game on an adjacent field when he heard a commotion and saw Shaw lying face down on the grass, according to The State. He said a woman was running around the fields asking if anyone had medical experience, and a coach who was also a firefighter ran to Shaw’s aid.
“As soon as that coach got over there, within a few seconds he was doing CPR [on Shaw],” Smith said. “That’s when it really got scary.”
Shaw was South Carolina’s starting quarterback for three seasons from 2011-13, throwing for 6,074 yards, 56 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for the Gamecocks. He led USC to three consecutive 11-win seasons, including a 17-0 record at its home Williams-Brice Stadium. He was elected to South Carolina’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.
After college, Shaw signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May 2014. He started one game for the Browns that season – the only appearance of his NFL career – in a season-ending 20-10 loss to the AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens. He completed 14 of 28 passes for 177 yards, one interception and one lost fumble in the game.
Shaw bounced on and off the Browns’ practice squad for the next two seasons before being waived in 2016. He was claimed on waivers by the Chicago Bears, but never appeared in a game and was released in September 2017.
Following his NFL career, Shaw served as the Gamecocks’ quarterbacks coach for three games in 2020 before transitioning to the program’s director of player development and director of football relations in 2021.
