A recent video from the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar has kicked off a heated discussion on civic sense in India. The clip, filmed by a Russian tourist who goes by the Instagram handle ‘Ameana Finds’, shows an elderly man casually littering inside the spectator gallery of the stadium at the Joint Check Post. In the footage, the man can be seen dropping an ice-cream wrapper beneath his seat, then nudging away an empty soft drink can with his foot, all while continuing to enjoy his dessert without hesitation. Sharing the moment online, the tourist captioned her post: “Why are some people like this.” The video quickly caught attention, with many Indians expressing frustration over how such actions appear in front of international visitors. One user remarked, “It’s such a shame litter instantly removes the beauty of a place,” while another pointed out, “How smoothly he slid it to the white man sitting ahead.” Echoing the sentiment, a comment read: “If we Indians understood civic sense, we would be the best in the world, but unfortunately, we are missing this.” Another user struck a hopeful note, writing, “Civic sense is a big issue in India but I am hopeful that the next generation will bring change. India’s Gen Z are very Western-influenced. They have already picked up alcohol, body count and drug culture from the West. Hopefully, they will pick up civic sense, too.” One more user remarked, ”We are sorry for such behaviour….Civic Sense is much needed in our country.
