Football roundup: Petaluma, Vintage roll to big wins; St. Helena defeats Middletown in thriller

Petaluma 57, Justin-Siena 12: The Trojans raced out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a dominant win over the Braves at home on Friday night.
Petaluma (4-2, 1-1 REC-Valley) rushed for 439 yards and got some big individual performances from Jonah Crichton and Evan Clarke. Crichton finished with 173 rushing yards on four carries with four touchdowns while Clark had 103 rushing yards on eight carries with a score.
Petaluma led 49-6 at halftime. The entire second half was played with a running clock.
Justin-Siena fell to 0-5 on the year and 0-2 in the REC-Valley. The Braves will play at American Canyon next week while Petaluma will host Napa.
Vintage 37, Napa 0: The Crushers won their ninth consecutive Big Game over their crosstown rivals on Friday night at Memorial Stadium to stay undefeated on the season.
Vintage (5-0) led 30-0 at the half and 37-0 after three, ending the game with a running clock for the fourth. The Crushers have won their last nine games over their crosstown rival by an average of 32 points per game.
Senior quarterback Blake Porter accounted for four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing. Travis Larsen and Ruben Sanchez each hauled in a receiving touchdown while Sawyer Carmichael added a rushing touchdown and an interception on defense.
It’s the second straight shutout for Vintage. Head coach Dylan Leach highlighted the defensive play of linebacker Bo Lode, the entire defensive lien and corners Larsen and Riley Marek.
Napa fell to 2-3 on the year and will resume REC-Valley play at Petaluma next week. Vintage will host Rancho Cotate next week in the first game of REC-Adobe action.
“We know we’re going to be underdogs every single game but I like where we’re at,” Leach said of league play. “We have some confidence. This team feels like they belong and deserve it and now they want to go out and prove it.”
St. Helena 41, Middletown 34: Quarterback Jhony Covarrubias ran in a one-yard touchdown with one second left to complete a thrilling comeback victory for the Saints over the visiting Mustangs in a pivotal North Central League clash on Friday night.
St. Helena (6-0, 4-0) trailed 26-14 at halftime but rallied back to tie the game at 34-34 early in the fourth quarter. The Saints got the ball back with five minutes left before orchestrating their game-winning drive.
Novato 36, Healdsburg 32: The Greyhounds put up a good fight but couldn’t crack into the win column in a tough loss to the Hornets on Friday night.
Healdsburg (0-6, 0-2 REC-Mountain) and Novato (2-3, 1-1) were tied 20-20 at halftime. The Greyhounds then took a 26-20 lead early in the third on an 18-yard touchdown reception by Hayden Mariani but the Hornets answered with a touchdown late in the frame to lead 28-26 heading to the fourth.
The Hornets extended their lead to 36-26 midway through the fourth. The Greyhounds answered with a five-yard touchdown reception by Max Morris with 2:58 left but the two-point try was unsuccessful and the ensuing onside was recovered by the Hornets. The visitors were able to run out the clock from there.
Healdsburg had a few costly mistakes on the night, including two long touchdown plays that were called back due to penalties in the first half and a fumble inside Novato’s 10-yard line late in the third.
Healdsburg quarterback Frank Rea had a 61-yard rushing touchdown and hit Morris for a pair of passing touchdowns on the night. Mariani also had a receiving touchdown and Dillan Jocius added a rushing touchdown.
The Greyhounds will look to snap their skid as host to Piner (0-5, 0-2) next week.
Tomales 44, Elsie Allen 12: The Lobos fell behind big early and couldn’t climb out of the hole in an NCL III road loss to the Braves on Friday night.
Tomales (5-1, 2-0) led 37-12 at halftime. Quarterback Andrew Lameli had three passing touchdowns in the first half, the Braves forced two safeties, a pick-six and returned a kickoff 70 yards for a score.
Edwin Vargas rushed for 130 yards in the loss and had a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for Elsie Allen (3-3, 1-1). The Lobos are on bye next week before a nonleague matchup with Kairos Public-Vacaville on Oct. 18.
Kelseyville 40, Cloverdale 7: The Eagles were overmatched in an NCL I matchup with the Knights on Friday night to fall to 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
