Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao 2 slammed by ex-champ after dull first fight ‘left a sour taste’

A high-profile boxing rematch has split opinion. Floyd Mayweather defeated Manny Pacquiao back in 2015, when the pair collided in a fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena that was dubbed the ‘Battle for Greatness’. Plenty of numbers backed up that moniker, with the highly anticipated showdown going down as the highest-grossing pay-per-view in history, generating $410 million in revenue from 4.6 million PPV buys. But while the fight was a lucrative one for all involved, it was the fans who felt short-changed after a 12-round contest that was widely described as dull and lackluster. That, however, has evidently not stopped a rematch from being in the works a decade later. Mayweather vs Pacquiao could happen in 2026, with reports suggesting the 48-year-old American legend is in line to return for his 51st professional bout against the Filipino. Sergio Mora has no interest in seeing Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao run it back Plenty have been quick to push back on talk of a rematch between the pair, which would come after a 2025 in which Pacquiao made his boxing comeback to challenge for the WBC welterweight title against Mario Barrios. That bout ended in a draw, showing that ‘PacMan’ still has it at the age of 46. Should the reported rematch go down as a pro contest, that could provide a threat to Mayweather’s perfect record. But even that factor wouldn’t be enough to draw the interest of ex-middleweight champion Sergio Mora, who is confused as to why Netflix seemingly think there is an appetite for a second chapter. “I don’t like it,” Mora said on DAZN Boxing. “You’ve got two all-time greats, and 10 years ago, they left a sour taste in people’s mouths. “It was successful. To this day, it was the highest-grossing pay-per-view sales. 4.4 million, one of the highest gates in boxing. Floyd Mayweather became uber-rich after that,” he added. “So, yes, it was a success for both men, but the fight stunk. The fight was forgettable. “So, why does Netflix think, why does any promoter think that 10 years later, this fight is going to be any better? It’s going to be just as bad or even worse because they’re old.” Netflix’s next boxing match is up in the air amid allegations against Gervonta Davis In addition to Netflix reportedly exploring the possibility of staging a rematch of boxing’s ‘Fight of the Century’, the streaming platform is also trying to save its next live event on November 14. The card at Kaseya Center is currently scheduled to be headlined by Jake Paul’s exhibition match against Gervonta Davis, but the controversial bout looks to be in trouble after fresh allegations of domestic abuse against the WBA lightweight champion. Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix is reporting that Netflix and Paul are searching for a replacement opponent for the upcoming event, which was already recently forced to slash ticket prices due to low demand. Netflix arrived in the combat sports realm with a record-breaking event headlined by Paul’s clash with Mike Tyson in November 2024.
