Floods Trigger Call for Compulsory Environmental Studies in J&K Schools

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s Committee on Environment has recommended introducing environmental science as a compulsory subject in schools. They believe that it should be implemented in all schools across the Union Territory. This comes after the UT witnessed floods, cloudbursts, and other disasters in the Himalayan region in past few months. The panel highlights the urgent need for preparedness and ecological awareness. The member was chaired by Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, with members Sajjad Shafi, Peerzada Feroze Ahmad, Zafar Ali Khatana, Yudhvir Sethi, and Darshan Kumar. Apart from introducing the subject, the committee also discussed flood-related challenges and highlighted the need for expert consultation to frame a long-term strategy. Departments were directed to submit detailed reports on flood control, mining, and plantation works. They must ensure a clean drinking water supply and prepare an annual action plan for rural sanitation. Other than this, awareness drives and district-level seminars were also proposed.
