Floods trap people in cars in Spain as futher warnings issued

Flash floods in Spain have left people “trapped in cars” and have caused travel chaos in the Catalonia region and along the Mediterranean coast. Storm Alice battered the country over the weekend, with floods sweeping through towns in the Tarragona area, The Independent reports. Videos shared online showed muddy water sweeping up vehicles and debris. Although there have been no reports of deaths or injuries so far, emergency services have been rescuing drivers from submerged vehicles. The heavy rain and flash floods resulted in train services between Barcelona and Valencia being suspended, while several roads in low-lying areas were closed. Further alerts for heavy rain and storms for October 13 have been issued by Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency, along the Mediterranean coast and for the Balearic Islands. Amber warnings are in force along the coastline including Valencia, Tarragona and Barcelona with rainfall of up to 40mm in one hour predicted, along with hail storms with ‘possible strong gusts’. An amber alert is also in force for Ibiza where up to 50mm of rainfall in one hour is forecast. Meanwhile, Majorca is covered by a yellow warning for rain. Conditions are set to improve for mainland Spain tomorrow although a few yellow warnings for rain and storms remain along the coast. But the Balearic Islands have been placed under amber alert for rain and storms, with conditions set to worsen there. By Wednesday, the weather front should have moved, with just a yellow warning in place for Menorca. For more of today’s top stories, click here.
