Boston’s Logan International Airport has seen more delays and cancellations recently. But unlike other airports around the country, it’s not due to the federal government shutdown. A spokesperson for Massport, the agency that oversees the airport, most of the recent delays have been due to either weather conditions or construction that has left one runway closed. And those delays will likely continue for another couple of weeks. “We do expect delays, particularly in the afternoons and evenings until mid-November, due to an ongoing runway construction project,” Media Relations Director Jennifer Mehigan said. “As always, we would advise passengers to check with their airline for the best info on their flight.” The federal government has been shut down since Oct. 1 due to a deadlock in Congress on passing funding for the next year. This has left about 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers around the country working without pay for over a month, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. That’s led to staffing shortages. Read more: What closes during government shutdown? Here’s what to know “After 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue,“ the agency said in a post on X last week. ”The shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they’ve earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays." To preserve safety, when there are staffing shortages, the FAA “will reduce the flow of air traffic,” officials wrote. Half of the FAA’s Core 30 airports — a list of some of the busiest air travel hubs in the country, which includes Logan — are experiencing staffing shortages, according to the agency. So far, Boston has managed to avoid any related delays or cancellations. However, construction on runway 9-27 is continuing to affect flights. The work is the first of two planned 75-day closures that will allow Massport to install a new safety system intended to stop planes that overshoot the runway, MassLive previously reported. The second closure is planned for sometime after July 1, 2026. There were 93 delays and two cancellations at Logan on Monday as of about 4 p.m., according to the air travel tracking website FlightAware. The airport saw a total of 341 delays and 12 cancellations over the weekend.
