The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the northwestern and western districts of the island. A Flash Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period (generally less than six hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. Excessive rainfall occurring this afternoon could generate flooding across low-lying areas in the northwestern and western districts. The BMS says light winds associated with Hurricane Humberto, located northeast of the region, along with high daytime temperatures, are allowing for afternoon localised convection. These showers are expected mainly across the northwestern and western districts during the afternoon, with convection diminishing during the late evening. There is a medium possibility of significant flooding, which may cause water settling on roads and fields, commuting delays, and possible isolated diversions in and out of the city. Other impacts include increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g., ponds), marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains, and property, as well as soil erosion on bare or scarred land surfaces. The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates. This Flash Flood Watch will be terminated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant. About The Author
