Five foodie events to look forward to in September

Fall is one of the best times for foodie events in Colorado, whether it’s a festival, a one-off meal or a dinner series. Here are five to look forward to this month.

Wednesday, Sept. 10 — ‘Chef’n It’ Featuring Colorado’s Best Chefs

Colorado foodie and marketing pro Tarah Runco debuts a monthly YouTube series on Wednesday that highlights chefs, restaurants and cuisine across the state — which is good timing considering that The New York Times just named two Colorado restaurants to its list of the 50 best right now, and the Michelin Guide will announce the state’s latest hotspots on Sept. 15.

In “Chef’n It,” Runco, the co-founder and creative director for Behind the Apron Media, will follow a different chef each episode as they prepare “a modified version of one of their restaurant’s favorite dishes — using approachable techniques and accessible ingredients to empower home cooks to recreate the essence of a beloved or newly discovered dish in their own home kitchens,” she said in a statement. They’ll also offer professional tips and personal stories.

Chefs include: Chris Royster of Boulder’s Flagstaff House, Cliff Blauvelt of Odie B’s, Luke Miller of The Greenwich; Fox and The Hen’s Carrie Baird, Kenta Kamo of Temaki Den, John Wilson of Bella Colibri in Golden, Emily Thompson, pastry chef of The Wolf’s Tailor, Erasmo Casiano from Lucina and Xiquita, and Lon Symensma, from ChoLon and YumCha.

Sunday, Sept. 14 — Cooking for Culture Community Bake Sale

The organizers of the Cooking for Culture Community Bake Sale, which benefits Kaizen Food Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Immigration Advocacy Network, had to move their event this year due to what they said was an “overwhelming response from the culinary community.”

What does that mean for you? A huge variety of baked goods from restaurants, bakeries and licensed businesses, including: The Bindery, Centennial Sourdough, Denver Macaron, Hearth, Hops & Pie, Leven Deli Co., Lil Bergamot, Magna Kainan, MAKfam, Panda Bao, Raquelitas Tortillas, Sweet Rice Flour, Yuan Wonton and more.

The event will be held at Mile High Spirits, 2201 Lawrence St. in Denver, from 10 a.m. until goods sell out. Please bring cash or use Venmo to make purchases. All proceeds benefit Kaizen Food Rescue, a Denver-based nonprofit “founded on the principle that food is a human right,” and the Rocky Mountain Immigration Advocacy Network (RMIAN), which provides free immigration legal and social services to children and detained adults in need — a timely service.

Sept. 15-18 — Savor the Season

EatDenver, a nonprofit that supports 450 Front Range bars and restaurants, hosts a four-night dinner series called Savor the Season. With its focus on agriculture, the series replaces EatDenver’s longtime fall fundraiser, Harvest Week, and features 24 chefs and restaurants preparing collaborative, five-course menus. It also gives attendees a chance to check out Truss House at the RiNo ArtPark, where the restaurant Comal, 3400 Arkins Court, used to be.

Following a cocktail hour with apps and drinks, the dinners are prepared family-style and presented at communal tables. Participants on Monday, Sept. 15 (vegan menu), benefitting Same Café, are River + Woods, Flagstaff House, Same Café, Boombots, Mizuna and Gladys. On Tuesday, Sept. 16, benefitting We Don’t Waste, the meals are prepared by The Plimoth, Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar, Johnny Bechamel’s, Blackbelly, Restaurant Olivia and Leven Downtown. On Wednesday, Sept. 17, (benefitting Work Options), it’s Vital Root, Margot, Kawa Ni, Coperta, Rootstalk and Bear Leek. And on Thursday, Sept. 18, (benefitting CHOW), it’s The Bindery, Lucina Eatery & Bar, Alma Fonda Fina, Tavernetta, Bistro Vendome and Ace Eat Serve.

Tickets are $175 per person and include a tip and paired beverages from the Block Distilling, Ironton Distillery, Ratio Beerworks, Carboy Winery, Blanchard Family Wines, Strongwater and Grüvi. Get tickets and more information at eatdenver.com/savor.

Wednesday, Sept. 24 — Garden to Glass

Join Room for Milly and the nonprofit Denver Urban Gardens for Garden to Glass, a one-night-only ticketed event that highlights the cocktail bar’s efforts to source seasonal, sustainable ingredients from local gardens, including that of the bar’s owner, Fiona Arnold. Tickets are $35 and include a welcome cocktail, light bites, and party favors. Proceeds go to Denver Urban Gardens. Some of the cocktails that will be available include: the Chive Martini, made with Woody Creek Gin and vermouth infused with fresh chives; the Whipped Fennel and Orange Negroni, made with Italian vermouth, fennel bulb syrup and whipped orange juice; and the Tomato Water Scaffa. with Woody Creek Gin, tomato water lime, curacao, basil and black pepper.

The event runs from 7-9 p.m. Get more information at roomformilly.com.

Saturday, Sept. 27 — Woods Boss Brewing Block Party

After a one-year hiatus, the Woods Boss Brewing Block Party returns to Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood from noon to 10 p.m. with live music, interactive family-friendly programming, food trucks, vendors and more. The blowout, at the corner of 22nd and California streets is free to attend. Activities include a splatter paint station, Stein-holding contest, a drag show, glitter face painting, and special food options from the nearby and newly opened Pig & Tiger restaurant. Other food options include Moya’s Tacos and the Blue Pan Pizza Food Truck.
