Star Wars is finally moving on from the sequel trilogy, with the first story set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming out today. The sequel trilogy didn't quite play out how Lucasfilm hoped; Forbes recently estimated that The Rise of Skywalker only made a profit of $48.3m, and the movie failed to receive critical acclaim. All this means Lucasfilm has struggled to decide what comes next. Still, the last few years have shown a willingness to move beyond the sequels; Daisy Ridley is booked to return in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order movie, while Simon Kinberg is writing a trilogy said to be the key to the future. Today, then, is a milestone for Star Wars; the first story set after The Rise of Skywalker has released, showing the timeline move on at last. One popular theory suggests Finn and Jannah will be key members of Rey's New Jedi Order. If that's the case, Boyega and Ackie could well return. The only question, of course, is whether Lucasfilm can make things up with Boyega; things didn't exactly end on a pleasant note. Boyega has often been outspoken about his disappointment with Star Wars, but Boyega has recently complained that he's tired of his every comment being filtered through this lens. As he explained: "I just think that it's really weird when you say stuff, and it goes through the filter of hungry journalists who need to have their blogs noticed. Sometimes, they articulate things that are far-fetched from the truth. So wherein in life, we can be two things at once. I can hate a certain element of it but still love it. I think that's what Star Wars is about... You know, I would say how I've honestly felt and go home and play Battlefront II just to feel better. Yeah, you know? So, it's that relationship I've always had with Star Wars, but I also believe that when it comes to the creative journey of Star Wars, like all of the fans here, you've got to do right by what we know of the lore, of the characters, and what we expect to be, you know, the top of entertainment and the best space opera in the world. You know what I mean?" Ironically, of course, these comments alone were filtered - taken as an indication he may well be willing to return.
