First look at the new art deco Orient Express

Commutes on the Tube are set to look even more dire, as a first look of the Orient Express Train is confirmation that elegance, luxury, and train travel can co-exist. The latest Orient Express train is a nod to the art deco period and has been meticulously designed by architect Maxime d’Angeac to give travellers a renaissance of travelling in style. The 17 original 1920s carriages were recovered from the Poland-Belarus border and revamped to blend heritage and modernity in a centenary celebration of art deco. Think original Lalique glasswork, Morrison & Nelson marquetry, and interiors that would make Ruhlmann and Dunand swoon. Yes, you read that right, a vaulted ceiling on a train. Sweaty sandwiches will also be a distant memory as the separate dining car pays tribute to the comfort and luxury of the original Orient Express. Travellers can sit in soft lighting on napa tables and armchairs, surrounded by the original marquetry of the train. The train also boasts both lavish and functional suites, adorned with newspapers, souvenirs, and art-deco ornaments. The Presidential Suite is where dreams really do come true. Fitted out with a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, an office, and a secondary sleeping compartment, you may never want to brave the Northern line again. The train is currently being displayed as part of a landmark exhibition “1925-2025: A Century of Art Deco” at the grounds of the Louvre in Paris, but will take to the tracks in 2027. For those who can’t wait until 2027, you can bring art deco straight into your home – it is after all the epitome of luxury, quality, and old-school glamour.
