First Covid-19, Then H1N1 And Now Hepatitis A: Actress Devi Chandana Shares Alarming Update

Malayalam actress and dancer Devi Chandana has revealed the severe health crisis she recently endured. On her YouTube channel, she shared with fans that she was hospitalised and spent time in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to a Hepatitis A infection. Known for her long-standing work in television serials, Devi Chandana’s disclosure came as a shock to many. “I was in the hospital for about a month. Initially, I experienced shortness of breath, but when I arrived at the hospital, I was diagnosed with Hepatitis A. My liver enzymes had spiked dramatically, and I was admitted to the ICU,” she explained. Thankfully, after two weeks in hospital, she is now on the road to recovery.
The actress also reflected on surviving previous illnesses such as Covid-19 and H1N1. “When Covid struck, I thought that would be the toughest battle. Six months later, H1N1 came, and I realised Covid was easier in comparison. This has been the biggest lesson of my life,” she shared.
Devi Chandana discussed the circumstances around contracting the disease, noting that she rarely travels alone. “When I went to shoot in Munnar and Mumbai, I always had company. Perhaps due to my ‘terrible immunity’, I was the only one to fall ill. It’s a little sad I was the only one affected,” she joked. Her husband Kishore described her condition, saying, “She was admitted on the night of the 26th of last month. She was so weak, like a bed of leeches. She couldn’t speak or get up, and would vomit if she tried to eat. Her eyes and body were yellow, with bilirubin at 18 and enzymes around 6,000.”
Devi Chandana also expressed sadness at missing significant family events, including her children’s debut and Navratri celebrations, as she was confined to her phone for around three weeks. She was hurt by some people dismissing her illness as “just jaundice”. Kishore reminded that illnesses affect everyone differently.
Currently, Devi Chandana is following a strict diet, avoiding salt, oil, and coconut. Doctors have recommended a month-and-a-half of rest before she can return to normal life. Both she and Kishore urged the public to take care with food and water while travelling and to ensure they have health insurance. They expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from family, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (Amma) star organisation, medical staff, friends, and students’ parents. “I will be back. I’m on the mend. After two weeks, I’ll return stronger than ever. Thank you to everyone who prayed. May no one else fall ill,” Devi Chandana concluded in her vlog.
