Fiji marks Chinese heritage and diplomacy

FIJI celebrated the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in the country and the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in a ceremony marked by cultural pride and national reflection. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the enduring contributions of the Chinese community in Fiji, highlighting their role in business, education, health, and the nation’s socio-economic development. “You have been the mainstay of our society, particularly in business. Your families have built livelihoods, strengthened communities, and enriched the social and economic fabric of our nation,” he said. Tracing the history of Chinese Fijians, the Prime Minister noted that the first settlers arrived in 1855 as traders and farmers. “Your journey mirrors Fiji’s own story of resilience and renewal,” he said. Rabuka also emphasized the importance of Fiji-China relations, noting that cooperation in trade, infrastructure, agriculture, education, and public health has brought tangible benefits to both nations. “Fifty years ago, Fiji and China established diplomatic relations founded on mutual respect and equality. Today, our partnership continues to grow stronger as we address shared challenges, including climate change, disaster resilience, and sustainable development,” he said. Over the past half century, this spirit of partnership has extended through diplomatic ties, development collaborations, and people-to-people connections. “We are proud to be a bridge between these two great nations, fostering understanding and cooperation in investment and trade, education, and cultural exchange,” said Chinese Association of Fiji President Jenny Seeto. Chinese Fijians from across the country attended the event, reflecting the community’s diversity, unity, and contributions to Fiji’s society, culture, and economy.
