Ghana must treat perpetrators of mob justice as seriously as armed robbers, says Professor Ken Attafuah, criminologist and adjunct lecturer at the GIMPA Law School. Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (3 November), Prof Attafuah outlined a five-point national strategy to combat what he calls “instant injustice” — the growing culture of citizens taking the law into their own hands. “We must fight mob violence with the same seriousness we fight armed robbery,” he said, noting that every act of lynching is both a criminal act and a national failure of justice. His five key recommendations are: Civic Education: The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) should lead a nationwide campaign to promote respect for the rule of law. “The NCCE must make this part of its core civic reorientation programme,” he urged. Educational Reform: From kindergarten to university, schools should teach civic responsibility and non-violence as part of national values. Prosecution of Offenders: “Lynching and mob violence must be prosecuted vigorously, just as we prosecute armed robbers and rapists,” Prof. Attafuah insisted. Police Capacity Building: He called for better training, logistics, and community relations to improve public trust and police performance. Reducing Social Tensions: Prof. Attafuah linked mob anger to inequality and class resentment, urging government to bridge the social divide. “When accidents happen between a Mercedes-Benz driver and a borla truck, the reaction depends on social class,” he said. “We must fix these underlying tensions.” The criminologist emphasised that mob justice weakens national security and corrodes confidence in democratic governance. “Violence has never been justice. It is lawlessness in disguise,” he said. Asaase Broadcasting Company airs on Asaase 99.5 Accra, Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Asaase 99.7 Tamale, Asaase 100.3 Cape Coast, AsaasePa 107.3 (Accra).
