Netflix has confirmed that it will be adapting a Philip K. Dick book, proving that it is finally leveling up its sci-fi game. When it comes to overall viewership numbers, Netflix continues to dominate all other streaming services. However, when it specifically comes to delivering compelling sci-fi content, other streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV are far above Netflix in terms of quality. While Prime Video has managed to have a few hit shows, like Upload, The Expanse, and Fallout, Apple TV continues to dominate the genre with one critical success after another. In contrast, Netflix has been far less experimental and far more reliant on familiar formulas with its sci-fi shows. It has taken a few risks in recent years but has achieved nothing substantial in a long time. Fortunately, it seems the streaming giant is finally leveling up its sci-fi game by adapting an intriguing piece of literary work. Netflix’s Adaption Of Philip K. Dick’s The World Jones Made Is Its Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Project In A Long Time Stranger Things' final season is one Netflix sci-fi show that every fan of the genre is looking forward to. However, Stranger Things also perfectly highlights the issue with Netflix's sci-fi catalog. Almost every addition to the genre on the streamer is either an extension of a well-established franchise or just a formulaic retelling of familiar ideas. Fortunately, Netflix is finally switching things up by adapting Philip K. Dick's The World Jones Made. Netflix's take on the 1956 novel will be titled The Future is Ours (El futuro es nuestro) and will portray how "draconian measures to safeguard the environment and combat widespread hunger and violence" are taken after a massive ecological disaster. Production of the series is already in full swing, and, as Netflix's VP of content for Latin America, Francisco Ramos, has revealed (via Variety), the show is one of the "most ambitious and complex productions, at the same level of scale and complexity as One Hundred Years of Solitude or The Eternaut." Netflix’s The Future Is Ours Is Taking Some Risky Creative Liberties Netflix's The Future is Ours seems to hold immense potential, considering the strength of its source material and Philip K. Dick's undeniable influence in the sci-fi genre. However, the show already seems to have one major issue: it is deleting a major plot from the original books. As its showrunner, Mateo Gil, has revealed, it will completely remove the alien story from the original book. This creative decision was seemingly made to ground the show's story in realism and allow it to reflect more relatable day-to-day issues. However, in the original book, the alien plot is crucial to the story as it serves as the perfect allegory for humanity's fear and prejudice. The primary existential payoff in the original story comes from the alien plot and deleting it means eradicating a very crucial layer of the narrative's true message.
