Felipe Massa lost out on the 2008 driver’s title under very controversial circumstances. The infamous Singapore GP Crashgate scandal caused Massa to lose the title by a mere one-point gap to Hamilton. As such, the Brazilian recently set out to pursue a legal case against the governing body, demanding that the 2008 title winner be overthrown. Now, a court hearing has ruled against the favor of the 44-year-old and said some stern things. Felipe Massa had recently provided a long-awaited update on his legal lawsuit against the authorities involved in the 2008 scandal. T he Brazilian had reassured that he would pursue the case until the very end, until he was compensated for all the financial losses since then. Now, in a recent court hearing, Massa and Co. received some shocking news from the defendant’s lawyer, who is accusing the former of some serious allegations. The defendant’s lawyers insisted that Felipe Massa’s claims in the matter were misguided attempts to reopen the championship results of the 2008 driver’s championship. Lewis Hamilton would be stripped of his title win, and Massa would be handed the title, which wasn’t possible. Even the then F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone had talked about the case and how changing the result wasn’t a possibility anymore. Further, the defendant’s lawyer claimed that the court wasn’t a sports debate club that required such matters to be taken to the court. Felipe Massa demanded that the court delve into a counterfactual exercise on the refreeing of the Crashgate scandal at the Singapore GP. The entire matter happened over 17 years ago, and hence it wasn’t required to be reopened now just to overturn the results of the championship battle back then. Mr Massa argues that, but for the FIA’s handling of the crash, he would have won the Drivers’ Championship. These declarations treat the court as a sports ‘debating club’, asking it to embark upon a counterfactual exercise concerning the ‘refereeing’ of a sporting event which took place nearly 17 years ago. The defendant’s lawyer, Mr David Quest KC said, via Sky Sports. Regardless of the Crashgate scandal, both drivers deserved the title win, and the best driver between them won the race.
