The Federal Government has commenced a three-day training on Safe School Response Coordination for security personnel in Jigawa State as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to secure schools in the North and across the country.
Speaking in Dutse, the Head of Training at the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Assistant Commandant Joseph A. Shuaibu, said the exercise was to enhance the capacity of security personnel to guarantee safe learning environments.
According to him, the training will equip coordinators and desk officers with modern skills, technologies and collaborative strategies to tackle the growing threats of banditry and conflicts targeting schools.
“This training is to strengthen participants’ ability to ensure secure schools. It aligns with the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Declaration and is part of NSCDC’s broader efforts to protect pupils, teachers, and school infrastructure,” Shuaibu stated.
He explained the programme, supported by development partners, also involves officers from sister security agencies to ensure coordinated responses.

“As you know, Nigeria is a signatory to the Safe School Declaration. The essence is to ensure our personnel are conversant with its implementation guidelines and properly equipped to carry out day-to-day activities without deviation,” he added.
The Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator of Save the Children International (SCI) in Jigawa, Mr. Joseph Apeh, commended the Federal and Jigawa State governments for investing heavily in child welfare and protection.
Apeh, who also served as a resource person during the training, informed the programme was organised in collaboration with SCI and supported by the European Union (EU) to promote the implementation of the Safe School Declaration.
“This training is vital in keeping our children safe. The goal is for schoolchildren to learn in peace without fear of attack or disruption,” he noted.
He added that the exercise would also strengthen awareness against the use of schools for military purposes by both state and non-state armed groups.
