Fears for woman after man charged with her attempted murder released on bail

Barbara Gomes, the mother of Claurine Prescod, says she fears for her daughter following the release on bail of the man who was charged with her attempted murder in 2024.

Prescod’s ex-husband, Navin Stoll was accused of stabbing her 24 times in 2024. The circumstances of his release on bail and the status of the court proceedings are yet unclear.

In an interview with the Sunday Stabroek, Gomes described the ruling as “crushing,” especially in light of the ongoing wave of femicides in Guyana. She said Prescod continues to live in fear and has not been offered protection by the justice system.

“My daughter was near death’s door,” Gomes said, noting that both of Prescod’s lungs were punctured during the attack. She added that her daughter sustained more than ten stab wounds to her back, two to each arm, and several others across her body. Prescod is currently undergoing therapy to regain mobility in her arms and other affected areas.
