The Finschhafen District Development Authority (FDDA), in partnership with the not-for-profit Katim Tasol Foundation, has launched a landmark healthcare initiative to bring reliable, high-quality healthcare to thousands of people in the district’s most remote and underserved communities.
Described as a “Fully Integrated Health Solution,” this pioneering pilot project will be implemented at five initial sites, prioritizing isolated regions where access to medical care has been extremely limited or nonexistent. The partnership is being launched under the motto
“Kina Bungim Kina,” representing a unique collaboration.
The FDDA emphasizes that this initiative is more than a simple infrastructure project; it is a bold and compassionate step toward health equity, based on the conviction that no one should be left behind.
At the heart of the project is a powerful combination of innovative medical infrastructure and long-term investment in people. Each project site will be equipped with a self-sufficient, durable, and modular clinic, specifically designed to handle Papua New Guinea’s rugged terrain and logistical challenges. These units are fitted with all the necessary equipment to deliver high-quality primary healthcare in line with the National Health Plan 2021-2030.
Once operational, each facility will provide a wide range of essential services:
Maternal and child healthcare
Skilled midwifery
Emergency care and basic surgery
Routine immunizations
Family planning
Health education and community outreach
Patient stabilization and hospital referrals
This new project builds upon the success of a pilot implementation in Indagen, Kabwum District, where a previously underperforming rural clinic was revitalized. During the Indagen pilot, the Katim Tasol Foundation provided emergency medical deliveries when transport delays led to low supplies and helped staff develop a simple forecasting system. Today, the Indagen clinic is fully operational and serves as a model for replication in other hard-to-reach communities.
Together, the FDDA and Katim Tasol Foundation are creating meaningful, long-term change for the people of Finschhafen. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to act boldly and collaboratively to ensure that families in even the most remote corners of Papua New Guinea receive the healthcare they deserve. “This program becomes a pathway to hope and healing,” the FDDA media statement reads. “It opens the door to lifesaving care for thousands and creates lasting, visible impact in communities that need it most”.
