FDA Issues Highest Risk Warning for Cake Recall

A recall of two types of Bundt cake sold, and distributed to customers all over the U.S. has been issued the highest risk warning—Class I—by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Doan’s Bakery issued a voluntary nationwide recall of its White Chocolate Coconut and Carrot Bundt Cakes on October 1 because they may contain undisclosed wheat and milk allergens in both products, according to a press release from the company. Both cakes were sold at two retail locations with nationwide distribution in New York and California. Why It Matters The potential presence of these undeclared allergens poses significant health risks to individuals with wheat and milk allergies, including the potential for life-threatening reactions. Wheat and milk are among nine major food allergens that must be declared on packaging to protect consumers with allergies. Even trace amounts can trigger potentially severe allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. What To Know Doan’s Bakery has announced a voluntary recall of its White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake—which has achieved cult status as a celebrity holiday staple, with actor Tom Cruise reportedly offering the dessert to several high-profile friends—and its Carrot Bundt Cake after a routine facility inspection on September 24, revealed that wheat and milk were not included on their labels when both cakes contain those ingredients. As of October 1, there have been no reported allergic reactions, illnesses, or fatalities linked to the consumption of the affected cakes, but customers with wheat or milk allergies are advised not to consume these products and to contact Goldbelly Customer Support at support@goldbelly.com or by phone at 1-888-675-6892 if they have any questions or concerns. Food recalls are classified I, II, or III by the FDA to indicate the relative degree of health hazard. The levels are: Class I: There is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II: Use of, or exposure to, a product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences with a remote probability of serious adverse health consequences. Class III: Use of, or exposure to, a product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences. What People Are Saying The FDA said that “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat and/or milk run the risk of experiencing a serious or life-threatening reaction if they consume these products.” What Happens Next Doan’s Bakery has taken immediate action and updated the labeling on all affected products. All customers with wheat or milk allergies who purchased the cakes between June 1 and September 24, 2025, are urged not to consume the products and to seek support through Goldbelly.
