FATF lauds India’s asset recovery system, hails ED as ‘model agency’

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global terror funding watchdog, in its latest report, has lauded India's asset recovery framework. In its latest publication titled 'Asset Recovery Guidance and Best Practices', it has praised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as a "model agency" for "effective asset recovery" and "international coordination". The publication provides a comprehensive and updated framework for strengthening global systems of asset recovery against financial crimes. India contributed to the development of the revised FATF standards and guidance through ED, people in the know said.Officers from ED participated in the FATF project teams responsible for drafting and contributed to the deliberations in the FATF working groups and plenary sessions. The guidance published by FATF features multiple Indian examples from ED investigations and operations, illustrating the implementation of FATF principles through India's legislative and enforcement framework.FATF noted that India has developed one of the most effective mechanisms among member countries to "identify, attach, and repurpose" assets derived from economic offences. The publication highlights the Indian system's ability to carry out both conviction-based and non-conviction-based confiscations, along with the use of technology and inter-agency collaboration to speed up investigations. It has also lauded India's legislative framework under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which allows swift freezing, attachment, and confiscation of criminal proceeds even while criminal trials are ongoing. It also appreciated India's coordination among key institutions such as the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), terming it a practical model for other countries to study.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
