The death of Ali Osman Bayram in a crash on Monday night on the Kyrenia-Kythrea road is attributed to a defective Takata airbag, according to the “mechanical engineers’ chamber” in the occupied areas.
The chamber’s president stated that despite years of warnings, necessary measures have not been taken and that uncontrolled imports of vehicles with dangerous airbags are now leading to deaths.
“Vehicles with Takata airbags are permitted to be imported without any checks,” he noted.

The chamber called for immediate measures to prevent new accidents, proposing the establishment of an independent safety council under its supervision, the creation of a central VIN search system for all vehicle owners, the adoption of mandatory recall legislation, and the existence of a legal basis for “prohibition of circulation” decisions on dangerous vehicles.

The chamber further requested the publication of lists containing dangerous spare parts, the receipt of warnings from international mechanisms such as the EU’s RAPEX system, strict supervision of service centres, the conduct of recall checks at vehicle technical centres, and the organisation of public awareness campaigns.
The chamber president emphasised the need to establish a compensation mechanism that would ensure responsibility across the entire chain of importers, dealers and manufacturers.
Only in this way, he said, can public safety and health be effectively protected and crises such as the Takata airbag issue be avoided.
