FASTag users alert! NHAI simplifies KYV process for vehicles; know what will change for you

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has streamlined the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) procedure to improve customer experience for FASTag users. According to the updated rules published by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), FASTag services will not be terminated for non-compliant vehicles and the users will have ample opportunity to finish the KYV procedure.Income Tax GuideIncome Tax Slabs FY 2025-26Income Tax Calculator 2025New Income Tax Bill 2025What are the new KYV (Know Your Vehicle) rules for your vehicles? As per the latest NHAI guidelines, side photos of cars, jeeps, or vans will no longer be required for the KYV procedure. All that has to be uploaded is the front image with the FASTag and the number plate. Additionally, when the user enters the vehicle number, chassis number, or mobile number in Vahan, the vehicle’s RC details from Vahan will be immediately fetched. In a case, where more than one vehicle is registered under a single mobile number, the user can choose the vehicle for which they want to complete KYV.FASTags issued prior to the KYV policy will continue to be active unless complaints regarding misuse or loose tags are received. Additionally, consumers will receive SMS reminders from issuer banks to complete their KYV.What should customers do if they face issues completing the KYV process or uploading documents for their FASTag?The issuing bank should proactively get in touch with the consumer and help them complete the KYV procedure by uploading documents. For any KYV-related concerns with their issuer bank, customers can also contact the National Highway Helpline at 1033 to file complaints or ask questions. What is FASTag?FASTag is a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid account linked to it. It is fixed on the windscreen of a vehicle, which enables people to drive through any toll plaza - without stopping for any cash transactions. What is KYV?According to the HDFC Bank website, “KYV (Know Your Vehicle) is a regulatory requirement for all FASTag customers to upload specific images related to their FASTag. This is introduced to ensure that the FASTag has been issued on the correct vehicle, vehicle number, and the FASTag has been affixed to the windshield. As per guidelines, KYV will be valid for three years. After three years, Re-KYV will be due, and you will have to re-upload the images.” Why is the KYV verification important?According to the ICICI bank website, “As per regulations, it is mandatory to complete KYV verification. You need to ensure that all images uploaded are clear and correct. The KYV images will be verified by the Bank and if any application is declined based on the Bank’s sole discretion, your FASTag will be hotlisted (you will not be able to use your FASTag at toll plazas and you must pay the penalty imposed by regulatory authorities). To remove the FASTag from the hotlist, you need to upload the correct documents again. Once verified and approved, your FASTag will be removed from the hotlist.”
