Minister for Small-Scale Industries and Public Enterprises and Yadgir district in-charge Sharanabasappa Darshanapur offered bagina to the Krishna at Basavasagar Reservoir (Narayanpur Dam) in Hunasagi taluk of Yadgir district on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that bagina offering has been slightly delayed this year and advised farmers to take up short-term crops that can be harvested within 90 days in the second season.
“This time, the water level is satisfactory and minor maintenance works will be taken up,” he said.
Referring to the recent crop losses caused by rain, the Minister said that he has discussed the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
“A detailed report will be submitted to the Union government within the next four or five days and compensation will be provided to affected farmers,” he said.
Mr. Darshanapur urged farmers to take precautionary measures while sowing crops in the next cycle.
“Works to fill lakes have already begun in several districts, including Vijayapura and Yadgir. Farmers should take up crops that will mature by the second week of March,” he added.
He further said that the Jaladhara project will be completed by March next year. Under the Budihal Lift Irrigation Scheme, pipeline works have been taken up to provide water for irrigation in about 20 hectares to 30 hectares of agricultural land.
Reiterating the State government’s commitment to increasing the height of the Almatti Dam, the Minister said that the government is determined to completing work on the Upper Krishna Project and ensuring water reaches farmland.
“The State government will expedite the land acquisition process and ensure that Karnataka fully utilises its rightful share of the Krishna waters,” he promised.
Earlier, the Minister performed a special puja to Goddess Shakti at the gauge room before leading a colourful procession to the bagina offering site, accompanied by local legislators and students of the Deshmukh Education Institution.
Priests led by Raghavendra Joshi performed the rituals. Traditional music bands and Kalasha processions marked the event, which saw a large turnout of officials and public representatives.
The Basavasagar Reservoir, with a total storage capacity of 33.313 tmcft, has reached full capacity this year.
Surpur MLA Raja Venugopal Naik, Yadgir MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur, Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar, Superintendent of Police Prithvik Shankar, Chief Engineer Ramesh G. Rathod, Executive Engineers Hanumanthappa Kannur, Vidyadhar, Raghavendra and several senior officials and local leaders were present.
