Family of Glasgow dad who 'lived life to the fullest' have one final goal in his memory

The family of a much-loved Glasgow dad have ‘one final goal’ in his memory following his death at age 58.

Sammy Johnston, a husband, dad, and dear friend, passed away on August 14 after a courageous battle with stage 4 brain cancer.

Sammy’s heartbroken loved ones said he “lived life to the fullest”, and that his “warmth, humour, and kindness touched everyone he met”.

His diagnosis of glioblastoma came as a devastating shock. Through the most difficult days, the team at the St Vincent’s Hospice in Howwood, Renfrewshire, cared for Sammy and his family offering compassion, comfort, and support, and giving them treasured time together before his final moments.

Football was the dad’s number one passion. This led to a successful career with clubs including Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, Ayr United and Pollok Juniors, before moving into management with Neilston Juniors, and coaching roles with Arthurlie Juniors.

After retiring from football, Sammy built a career with HPE, but his greatest joy was his family – his wife Annmarie, his children Mathew and Stephanie, and his granddaughter Norah.

Sammy’s family have chosen to honour his memory by fundraising to support the work of the hospice, ensuring other families can receive the same care and dignity they experienced. Together with friends across the UK, Spain, and Dubai, they will be organising marathons, golf days, Munro climbs, gala dinners, and more – with an incredible goal to raise a whopping £50,000 in one year.

His daughter Stephanie wrote: “This is not just about remembering Sammy — it’s about giving back in his name, and making sure that other families are surrounded with the same love and support that carried us through.”

The family’s JustGiving page has already reached over £12,500.
