Family look for £180k tutor to help baby become ‘English gentleman’

A family is searching for a £180,000-a-year tutor to prepare their one-year-old to become a “quintessentially English” gentleman. The couple, wealthy business people based in north London, hope an early years specialist will foster the toddler’s development and help them be accepted to a “top-flight school”. The boy’s parents, who are not believed to be English, said they wished to “cultivate a truly bicultural child” who could attend “Eton, St Paul’s, Westminster or Harrow”. According to the job listing on Tutors International, an elite private tutoring company, the family is looking for a candidate who speaks with received pronunciation, is “culturally astute” and well-travelled. They suggested that the successful applicant will have experience working in private residences, embassies or royal households, as well as specialist early-years education training. Early exposure to high culture The job listing states: “Having started at age five with this child’s older brother, they [the family] felt that even this was too late to achieve their goal, hence their search for a tutor now. “At this stage the child is too young to have developed any kind of cultural bias, which makes it the perfect time to begin exposing him to the activities and knowledge which will set him on a course to dual culturalism. “Like any one-year-old, the child enjoys sensory play, music, and activities that involve imitating speech. “He is already curious about his world and experimenting with proto-speech. He is a typical little boy for his age – into everything and already learning at an astonishing rate.” The tutor is expected to help the toddler hone his “habits, outlooks, tastes and sporting preferences”, including regular musical activities and visits to Lord’s Cricket Ground, Wimbledon, Twickenham stadium and rowing clubs. Clients of Tutors International are typically multi-millionaires and billionaires who are self-made in fields such as private equity, banking and property. The job is 35 hours per week, between the hours of 10am and 3pm, which will increase as the boy gets older. Accommodation is not provided and holidays are four weeks per annum. The initial contract is 12 months, but the family suggest that they hope the relationship will be “renewable for many years”. The job listing states: “The successful applicant for this role will be someone very special. A consummate professional with several years of elite experience, the Tutor will need to be someone qualified to support the educational and developmental needs of children from ultra-high-net-worth and royal families. He or she will likely have attended the best schools and universities in England. “With a demonstrable track record in supporting school readiness, early literacy, numeracy, and bilingual development, the Tutor must also be experienced in developing tailored curriculums, managing structured daily routines and liaising with other household staff to ensure continuity of care and learning. In addition, he or she must have received training in paediatric first aid. “Known for their warm yet composed presence, the Tutor must be able to foster a nurturing, engaging environment where young children thrive – academically, emotionally, and socially. The Tutor will need to be physically fit and healthy, a non-smoker.” It adds that the successful applicant “should be mindful not to go too far, too fast – the boy is very young for any formal tuition, and a more explorative Montessori style will likely be more appropriate”. The application deadline is November 16.
