FAFSA 2026-27: N.Y. tuition assistance applications now available

New Yorkers looking to further their educations in the upcoming year can now apply for various financial aid programs to help support them as they pursue a degree.
On Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that applications are now open for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program, and the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Incentive Program for the 2026-27 academic year.
The 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid is also available now, which determines eligibility for federal and state aid programs.
“Programs like TAP and the STEM Incentive Program are vital in providing New York students with the financial support and opportunities they need to pursue higher education and achieve their dreams,” Hochul said.
“Equally important is completing the FAFSA, which opens the door to essential federal financial aid. These programs help students to overcome financial barriers, access quality education, and create a stronger future for themselves and their communities,” the governor continued.
The state’s Tuition Assistance Program awards roughly $800 million each year to New Yorkers facing financial constraints, with a recent expansion making it available to more students than ever before.
Under the program’s expansion, which was included in the FY25 state budget, the minimum TAP award has doubled from $500 to $1,000. The maximum annual award is $5,665.
Additionally, the budget has raised the income thresholds to qualify for TAP, in a change that’s expected to benefit roughly 93,000 students, including 48,000 who are now newly eligible for TAP.
The NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Incentive Program offers an annual tuition award to eligible students who study an approved two- or four-year STEM degree at any SUNY or CUNY college or university and agree to live in the state and work in a STEM field for five years after graduation.
The 2026–27 FAFSA and New York State Tuition Assistance Program applications are available through June 30, 2027, with the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Incentive Program application open until August 15, 2026.
More information on financial aid opportunities for New Yorkers is available on the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) website at hesc.ny.gov.
“HESC’s mission is to ensure that higher education remains within reach for every student in New York. With TAP, the STEM Incentive Program, and the FAFSA now open, students have more opportunities to secure the financial support they need. By completing these applications, families can reduce the burden of college costs and help students pursue their dreams,” said New York State Higher Education Services Corporation President Dr. Guillermo Linares.
