The lawsuit was filed in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal

If you filed in Facebook’s $275 million privacy settlement, you might get a payment within weeks, the settlement’s administrator said. The social media platform will soon begin issuing payments to millions of users as part of a $725 million settlement over claims that the social media platform misused user data.The settlement stems from lawsuits that accused Facebook of improperly sharing users’ personal data with advertisers and third-party firms, with the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal remaining the most significant one.Cambridge Analytica – a company owned by the hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, and headed at the time by Trump’s key adviser Steve Bannon – used personal information taken without authorisation in early 2014 to build a system that could profile individual US voters, in order to target them with personalised political advertisements.ALSO READ: Did Tyler Robinson drop hints before shooting Charlie Kirk dead? While Meta, Facebook’s parent company, denied wrongdoing, it agreed to the massive payout to resolve the cases.The lawsuit was filed in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the now-defunct data firm faced allegations of harvesting information from Facebook users to influence voter targeting during the 2016 presidential election. People in the United States who used Facebook anytime during a 15-year period were eligible to opt in to the settlement back in 2023. Users who had an Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, were eligible to be included in the settlement, as per USA Today.Live EventsEligible users needed to file a claim in the lawsuit by Aug. 25, 2023 to receive a payment. What his social media posts reveal When will Facebook settlement payments be issued?According to court filings, the distribution of payments in Facebook lawsuit settlement case was scheduled to begin in late August. Settlement payments started being distributed on September 9. According to the settlement website, individuals who have been approved for a payment will receive an email notification three to four days prior to the payment being issued. According to court documents, the average payout will be just $29.43, with the highest amount capped at $38.36 for users who were active on the platform throughout the entire 15-year period covered by the case.The final payments will be determined based on how long each user maintained an active account between May 2007 and December 2022. A system of “allocation points” will be used to calculate individual shares, giving more to users with longer usage histories.
