Facebook and Instagram to get ads based on users' AI chats

As Meta continues to integrate AI into all of its products and services, the company will soon start using data from users’ AI chats to serve targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram. The plan was recently greenlit by the parent company and will go into effect this December.

Meta published a blog post this morning where the company announced and outlined its plans to start recommending ads to users based on their interactions with the company’s generative AI features. Meta will also use this data to recommend which posts and Reels users see when scrolling. Official notices about the upcoming change will go out on October 7, and the update will go live on December 16.

Meta says that over a billion people use its AI services every month, which include a standalone app as well as integration into social media juggernauts Facebook and Instagram. Social media platforms have long used user behavior to inform their algorithm, and now Meta will be adding AI to that practice.

Mark Zuckerberg has a vision for how A.I. could be used in Meta’s universe. But the actor and filmmaker Joseph Gordon-Levitt is here to point out a flaw in the technology: an apparent lack of guardrails around how the company’s chatbot interacts with underage users.… pic.twitter.com/NIPDV32rPr

This is just the latest example of Meta’s increased emphasis on AI technology wherever they can fit it into their business. Last month, the company announced new Meta AI Ray-Ban glasses.
