Expert says 3 ingredients will keep your home free of spiders and fruit flies

Spider mating season is upon us, bringing with it the inevitable invasion of eight-legged intruders in our homes. However, there’s no need to panic as Chantel Mila, better known as Mama Mila on social media, has stepped in with her top tips for keeping these persistent pests at bay. While spiders are a common sight in homes throughout the year, their presence is particularly noticeable during autumn , which marks the start of their mating season. This is also when these arachnids seek refuge from the cold, often making themselves unwelcome guests in our bedrooms and bathrooms. Mila, an Australian home hack sensation with a massive online following, has received heaps of praise for her advice on how to deter unwanted critters, including bugs and fruit flies, without resorting to harsh chemical s. Her go-to deterrents include rosemary, water, and orange oil to maintain a bug-free home. In her video, she shares her three best tricks, starting with a spider-repelling spray: “Mix a cup of water with sprigs of rosemary. Spray on windows and doors – spiders hate the smell of rosemary, so it repels them from entering your home,” she advises. The next tip is a real game-changer for those struggling with fruit flies in the house. The savvy mum advised: “Pour boiling water down the drain to deter fruit flies and their eggs.” The third nugget of wisdom aims to keep other scuttling pests at bay: “Add orange oil to your mop to repel crawling insects.” She emphasised that care must be taken when using essential oils near pets, due to their delicate constitution, reports the Mirror . The online community was captivated by these domestic tips, with numerous users rushing to thank the resourceful mother-of-two for her advice. “Good to know my friend got bitten by a spider and ended up in the hospital,” one social media user said in response. “I need to do this,” another commented eagerly. However, not everyone was convinced by the boiling water method. One response was tinged with sarcasm: “Yes, please keep pouring boiling hot water down the drain. It keeps my husband in business,” a commenter quipped. Contrasting views emerged as another hit back with: “Fruit fly eggs actually do live and hatch in drains and boiling water is the only way to get rid of them.” Yet another person chimed in with their own tip: “Also mint is good against stink bugs.”
