Exclusive: UFC 321's Ciryl Gane Has Stern Warning for Tom Aspinall's Camp

Ciryl Gane (13-2) believes Tom Aspinall's (15-3) camp would be wise to exercise caution ahead of their UFC 321 clash. Gane will challenge Aspinall for the UFC Heavyweight Championship on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. During the countdown show for UFC 321, Aspinall's father and coach, Andy, shared that he doesn't think Gane will have any answers for his son during their title fight. Gane responded to that comment during an interview with Newsweek Sports. "Bon Gamin" made sure to deliver a warning to Aspinall's team ahead of Saturday's collision. "When you look at the ranking, when you look at my career, I think he's underestimating me," Gane said. "I'm not sure. I think it's not a good way to do that. I think maybe it's for the media to create something, but I think when you're on a high level, you can't talk like that, man. No sense. If you like to say that, maybe it's to bring him more confidence, maybe to [scare] me, or maybe just for the social media. If he believes in this with all of his team, that's not good for him." Prior to his clash with Aspinall, Gane said he isn't sensing different vibes from when he was in the midst of fight week for the Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones fights. "The sensation is I'm really happy to be here, but I think I was really happy also for Jon Jones and Francis," Gane said. "No difference, just something usual. I know this feeling already for the big day."' Testing Tom Aspinall Aspinall's fights usually don't last long, and that has made it difficult for some fighters to prepare for him inside the Octagon. Gane believes he can test Aspinall in different areas when the two trade leather. "Yes, of course," Gane said. "I think when you take your time and you analyze Tom Aspinall, maybe you can find some stuff like that because he don't have the experience to go five rounds and because he never fought a guy like me. He's a really well-rounded fighter with good speed. So, this was an advantage on his former opponent, but it's going to be a little bit different with me for sure." Defending the Heavyweight Division There have been critics who scoff at the talent pool in UFC's heavyweight division. Gane believes it's an unfair criticism. "Yeah, in the heavyweight division you have a lot of good fighters," Gane said. "They like to bash the heavyweight division because we are heavy. It's not easy to be in that light [when you are over 100 kilos] and to also be technical, to have the conditioning. The people are really hard with this division." Another key heavyweight matchup scheduled for the UFC 321 card will be Jailton Almeida taking on Alexander Volkov. Gane wouldn't be surprised if this bout ends up being a title eliminator. "The UFC staff know what they do, and if you do that, of course it's because these two guys are really good and really close to the title fight," Gane said. "So, probably yeah." Alex Pereira vs. Jon Jones? Alex Pereira reclaimed the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship by stopping Magomed Ankalaev in the opening frame of their rematch. During the UFC 320 post-fight press conference, "Poatan" called for a fight against Jon Jones at the planned UFC White House event. Gane believes that Pereira could make some noise as a heavyweight. "When I heard my coach talking about the MMA business, he likes to say Jon Jones is the mainstream guy, but just after him you have Alex Pereira," Gane said. "So, it makes sense and I know he wants to move to the heavyweight division and he can do it. He has big power. Yeah, everything is possible, but we'll see." What Winning UFC Gold Would Mean Gane is a former interim UFC Heavyweight Champion, but he's never earned the undisputed distinction. He was unsuccessful in his attempts against Ngannou and Jones, but Gane believes he will finally shatter the glass ceiling. "Right now, it's my target," Gane said. "So, I'm going to be, at first, really happy because I did a lot of sacrifice for this one, and I will be really grateful about the life, about all of my career, the experience, the wins, the losses, and it's going to be my feeling. I think I'm going to be really happy." On a personal level, Gane knows how important it would be to represent France as the undisputed king of the UFC's heavyweight division. "I'm going to be really happy for my coaches, for my family, for my friends, and also for the fans who supported me in my country," Gane said. "We are a sport country. We are really good in soccer, basketball, athletics, every sport. Now, we are really good in MMA, and I want to prove it."
