Excellence at Every Age on Display Good evening, Belize. I’m Shane Williams here to bring you a power-packed parade of sporting spectacles right here on this week’s edition of Sports Monday. Over one hundred and fifty road runners lined up at the start of the 2025 BDF Henry Usher Marathon. In an hour, twenty-one minutes and fifty-four seconds we take you back to the finish line where Jesus Contreras of team Splash Elite is coming in all alone for first place in the half marathon, taking along with him a cash prize and a year’s worth of bragging rights. Francis Lima finished second and Justo Ico took home the third prize. Dorsha Sabido is the first woman to finish the half marathon, followed by Jane Champion and BDF Run Club’s Alberta Coh. In the ten K race, Leon O’brien of team Splash breaks the tape in thirty-six minutes and twenty-six seconds. Mauro Cucul finished second and Ardel Avila from the Belize Coast Guard finished third. Hill Treaders’ Olga Hernandez won in the female ten K category. Karinie Wilson was second and Bobby D Usher took third place. In the shortest and fastest race of the event, Hector Carlos finished five Kilometers in eighteen minutes and twenty seconds. Christopher Broaster crossed the line second and Gerald August Jr. third. In ladies five K, Julia Puerto finished first in twenty-five minutes and four seconds. Rigoberta Makin was second and Jamie Usher rounded out the top three. Stopping in at the Civic Center where over three hundred young basketball players laced up their sneakers in a two-day three-on-three basketball showcase this weekend. We start with a look at the age five to eight division where the scoring started right at the jump with the red team scoring two quick baskets in the first twenty-two seconds. In the nine to twelve age range, we see these young athletes quickly turning a defensive stop into a long-range shot. We see the making of a more sophisticated style of play in the thirteen to fifteen category here with this dish and dive. And in between the whistle, there was a whole lot of coaching, clearly showing that the focus of this type of showcase is development and not game results. Kashief Thomas, CEO, Belize Global Elite Academy “This right here is beautiful because nobody expect to see this right here. This round robin stuff right here is basically just three on three. You know the development, the fundamentals because that’s what makes the sport beautiful. Every kid happy because they getting playing time. When you play five on five you might not get play.” Moving on to some five-a-side basketball with scores from this weekend’s William Dawson Sprite Cup. On Saturday, Hard Rock smashed Survivor Ballers thirty-eight to twenty-eight, Tuff Enuff dimmed the lights of the Rising Stars sixty-four to thirty-two, Tora Bora outlasted the Boulevard Ballers in the tightest match of the weekend, forty-one to thirty-nine, Class topped two-point-Oh B.Z. forty to twenty-six and ain’t no Paradise out West for the Boom Ballers who left with an L, forty-seven to thirty-seven. On Sunday, vengeance was delayed as the Warriors of Lords Bank defeated the Avengers forty to thirty-one, IG Ballers finessed the Reapers forty-seven to forty-five, Don One totally eclipsed Sunset Warriors sixty-seven to twenty-five and Trench Town cut down G Assassins sixty-eight to forty-four. There were three games this weekend in the Premiere League of Belize. In the battle of Belmopan, no ruler of the capital city was crowned as Napoles FC and Belmopan FC ended with a two-two draw at Isidoro Beaton Stadium. Wagiya was way too much for Benque Viejo United at the FFB Stadium, scoring nine spectacular goals while surrendering none. And at the Marshalleck Stadium, the green machine outclassed their rivals five-nil in the beautiful game. In volleyball, St. Catherine’s Academy won their twentieth straight National high school championship. Emaun Marin was named tournament MVP. Sacred Heart took the silver medals while Toledo Community College took bronze. In the boys’ tournament, the SJC wildcats secured their sixth straight national title behind an MVP performance from Orion Butler. Muffles Bobcats took home the second-place trophy while Independence Invaders finished third. In the Belize City primary school championships, Belize Elementary girls defeated Holy Redeemer in the championship in straight sets and Holy Redeemer’s boys took vengeance in two close sets over Belize Elementary School. Both schools will be competing in the District Finals on Tuesday at Swift Hall, be sure to stop by. Well, that’s all we have for you tonight on Sports Monday. Until next time, remember that sports unite and ball is life so, keep balling Belize!
