European Indices Close at Record High, Led by Healthcare Stocks

Brussels, October 1 (QNA) – European stocks closed at record highs Wednesday, led by healthcare stocks after a US deal with Pfizer eased uncertainty in the sector.The pan-European Stoxx 600 index closed up 1.2 percent, its biggest daily percentage gain since July 23, while most European exchanges also rose, with London’s FTSE 100 hitting an all-time high.Healthcare stocks jumped 5.4 percent, their best daily performance since November 2008. Pfizer agreed on Tuesday to lower prescription drug prices in the US Medicaid program in exchange for tariff relief.Novartis shares rose 3.9 percent after the FDA approved its oral treatment for a type of chronic inflammatory skin disease. All sectors saw positive trading, but travel and leisure stocks bucked the trend, falling 0.4 percent. (QNA)
