European Council Endorses New Strategic Agenda To Deepen EU–India Partnership

New Delhi, Oct 21 (KNN) The European Council on Monday approved conclusions on a new strategic agenda between the European Union (EU) and India, acknowledging the ‘strong impetus’ in bilateral relations and outlining an expanded framework for cooperation. The agenda seeks to advance collaboration across key areas such as prosperity and sustainability, technology and innovation, security and defence, connectivity, and global governance. It follows the agenda’s unveiling last month by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships “rooted in shared interests and guided by common values.” A central component of the renewed engagement is the ongoing negotiation of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and India. The Council expressed support for concluding a ‘balanced, ambitious, mutually beneficial and economically meaningful’ agreement by the end of the year. It said the pact should enhance market access, eliminate trade barriers, and include strong provisions on sustainable development, reported Business Standard. Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal recently confirmed that FTA discussions are progressing ‘very well’ and have reached their final phase, following the 14th round of negotiations held earlier this month in Brussels. The Council also underscored the growing importance of the EU-India defence partnership amid evolving global security challenges. It welcomed ongoing discussions toward establishing an EU-India Security and Defence Partnership, which would deepen strategic consultations and cooperation in areas such as crisis management, maritime security, counterterrorism, and addressing cyber and hybrid threats. Negotiations on a Security of Information Agreement—intended to enable the exchange of classified data and bolster defence collaboration—are also underway. In addition, the Council reaffirmed its intention to continue engaging with India on all aspects of Russia’s war against Ukraine. It further stressed the joint responsibility of both partners to uphold multilateralism, the rules-based international order anchored in the UN Charter, and the integrity of the global trading system, particularly under the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
