Roger Federer has never hidden his affection for the Laver Cup, the team competition he helped bring to life. Ahead of the 2025 edition in San Francisco, the Swiss legend shared his thoughts on the balance of power between Team Europe and Team World — and he didn’t hesitate in pointing out where he thinks the edge lies.
“I think Europe is probably the favourite – mainly because of Alcaraz and [Alexander] Zverev on the team,” Federer said. “Especially Alcaraz – he’s playing tennis on another level, honestly. I always enjoy watching Carlos – he’s a real treat to watch.”
The former world No. 1 explained that the depth of Team Europe’s lineup, anchored by world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, puts them in a strong position to extend their dominance in the event. While Federer acknowledged the growing strength of Team World — particularly in singles with Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur all ranked inside the top 10 — he believes the deciding factor may not be doubles, but the high-powered singles showdowns.
“I do think that Europe probably overall has a stronger team,” he added. “And I think the doubles are not as crucial this time around because I think both teams are about equally strong in the doubles. It’s going to come down to the singles. I think with Carlos Alcaraz on the team and him already arriving in San Francisco and ready to go, I give Europe the edge here in San Francisco to take it home again.”
Federer on Alcaraz’s brilliance
Federer’s praise for Alcaraz echoed what many in the tennis world have been saying for months: the 22-year-old Spaniard is redefining the sport at the top level. Already a multiple Grand Slam champion and now the leader of Team Europe, Alcaraz brings both firepower and reliability in high-pressure matches. Federer described him as “a real treat to watch” and suggested his presence could swing the competition in Europe’s favour almost single-handedly.
Alongside Alcaraz, Zverev’s presence as world No. 3 adds further weight to the European roster. The German has been in consistent form all season, reaching the business end of most major tournaments. With Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, Jakub Mensik, Flavio Cobolli, and Tomas Machac completing the lineup, Federer sees a well-rounded group that can deliver across multiple matchups.
Team World’s Rising Stars
While Federer tipped Europe as the favourite, he also expressed excitement about the talent assembled by Team World. The Americans are spearheading the challenge, with Taylor Fritz (No. 5) and Ben Shelton (No. 6) joined by Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, Alex Michelsen, and Reilly Opelka. Australia’s Alex de Minaur (No. 8) and Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo (No. 21) round out a formidable lineup.
One player who particularly caught Federer’s eye was Brazilian teenager João Fonseca, ranked No. 42. “I’d really like to see him play,” Federer admitted. “I actually met him for the first time today. I think he has huge talent, and he’s a super nice guy – you only hear good things about him. I’ll definitely be there when he plays. I hope he gets to play several matches so I can really see how good he is.”
The Federer stamp of approval
Federer’s endorsement carries weight — both among fans and within the locker room. For Fonseca, still just 18 and making his Laver Cup debut, such recognition from one of the sport’s all-time greats could serve as a huge confidence boost.
With Brooksby and Machac waiting in reserve as alternates, both teams appear stacked and ready for battle. Yet Federer’s assessment was clear: Europe remains the favourite, thanks largely to the unstoppable momentum of Carlos Alcaraz. For the fans in San Francisco, that means they can expect a weekend of electrifying tennis where legends and rising stars collide — and where Federer will be courtside, watching closely.
