The European Commission is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement by giving away 40,000 tickets to young travellers to explore Europe. The competition is open for young people born between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. They will need to complete a short quiz about the European Union on the European Youth Portal. Successful applicants will be able to travel for free for up to 30 days between March 1, 2026 and May 31, 2027. They will receive a discount card for public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sports, and other services in 36 European countries. The initiative is part of the DiscoverEU programme, an action of Erasmus+. Applications close on November 13. The Schengen Agreement was signed in June 1985 originally by five countries: Belgium France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Considered a cornerstone of European integration, the agreement provides freedom of movement for over 450 million people without routine border checks. The Schengen area now includes 29 countries.
