Ethan Hawke, star of “The Lowdown,” made a Wednesday appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to promote the new series.
After a clip was shown, Kimmel made reference to “The Lowdown” being set in Tulsa, Oklahoma — “where we are not on the air tonight.”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” returned to the airwaves Tuesday following Kimmel’s brief suspension, but ABC stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting Group are not airing the talk show. KTUL channel 8 in Tulsa is owned and operated by Sinclair.
So, said Kimmel to Hawke when the setting of “The Lowdown” was being discussed, “Tulsa gets a shout-out that they cannot hear.”
“That’s unfortunate,” replied Hawke. “I live in Brooklyn. … My kids go to school in Brooklyn. We went down to Tulsa to shoot there for about five or six months. So I put them in school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There were so many amazing, wonderful people that made us food and welcomed us and treated us with respect and treated my kids with respect. Great teachers.”
Continuing, Hawke said, “You know what’s funny? It’s crazy. You go to Brooklyn, there’s amazing people. You go to Tulsa, there’s amazing people. We’re not as different as everybody makes it sound.”
Hawke’s words drew applause from the audience.
When the conversation veered to “The Lowdown,” Kimmel asked Hawke about his character, Lee Raybon, being a self-proclaimed “truthstorian.”

Asked what a truthstorian is, Hawke said, “It’s the intersection of you don’t know the truth if you don’t know history. What I like about Lee, my character, is (truthstorian) is also not a word and he really doesn’t make sense and he’s a hot mess. But he’s onto something.”
Hawke referenced the clip that was shown and indicated that his character was wearing Band-Aids from taking a beating.
“You may or may not know this,” Hawke said. “But sometimes if you tell the truth to people with money and power, you get punched in the face.”
“It doesn’t have to be somebody with money and power,” Kimmel said. “It could be a mad guy on the corner.”
Hawke talked about being in “Reservation Dogs,” another shot-in-Oklahoma series. Sterlin Harjo, the creator of “Reservation Dogs” and “The Lowdown” was in the audience and got a shout-out from Kimmel and Hawke.
Kimmel mentioned to Hawke that Tulsa seems to be booming as a filming location.
“I hope so,” Hawke said. “We made a great show. I had one of the best times of my life. I wouldn’t be out here if I didn’t love this show.”
The segment began with Hawke talking about how one of the heroes of his life was Robert Redford, who recently passed away. Hawke told a humorous story about auditioning for Redford.
Among Hawke’s comments about Redford: “He understood how to use his power to empower other people.”
Hawke also shared the last thing Redford ever said to him: Stop wearing a cowboy hat. People will think you’re losing your hair.”
