Eric Chelle: NFF will decide — Sports commission chairman discusses Super Eagles coaching situation
National Sports Commission chairman Alhaji Shehu Dikko discussed Eric Chelle’s future.
The chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, said that the responsibility of sacking Eric Chelle remains in the hands of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), not theirs.
Calls for Eric Chelle’s sack
The Super Eagles are in a precarious position, as they risk missing consecutive World Cups. Nigeria are currently 3rd in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa, with only two games to go.
Despite collecting eight points from a possible 12, Chelle has come under scrutiny. The Super Eagles had collected only three points in the four games before Chelle, but their chances were salvageable.
However, draws against Zimbabwe and South Africa, which came under the French-Malian coach, diminished those chances. His group stage exit with the CHAN Eagles and insistence on playing a 4-4-2 diamond formation further damaged the perception surrounding his employment.
What Dikko said
There have been calls for Chelle’s sack, which Dikko addressed in a recent Zoom interview with Channels TV. He said sacking him is not their responsibility, and they will only do so on the NFF’s recommendation.
”As for Eric Chelle, it is the responsibility of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to decide that at the end of the day,” he said, per The Guardian. “After they sit, they will look at the analysis and recommend it to us, and we will look at it to either approve or disapprove it.”
