EPA to reclaim lands destroyed by galamsey under EcoReclaim Project

The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring and rehabilitating lands destroyed by illegal mining activities, otherwise known as galamsey. According to a report by citinewsroom.com, she made the remarks at the launch of a 2,000-hectare pilot reclamation project at Gyaman Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region. She underscored the government’s determination to reverse environmental destruction and revive degraded ecosystems “The reclamation project we’re launching today is a step toward healing the land, restoring livelihoods, and rebuilding hope,” she stated. Prof Klutse said the initiative falls in line with the EPA’s core mandate to protect, manage, and enhance the country’s environment while promoting sustainable growth. “This is a national initiative focused on reclaiming degraded lands and rehabilitating ecosystems destroyed by mining and other unsustainable human activities,” she remarked. Under the EcoReclaim Project, degraded areas will be surveyed, mapped, and restored using advanced ecological engineering methods, including topsoil replenishment, slope stabilization, and the planting of indigenous tree species with phyto-remediation properties, capable of removing heavy metals and improving soil fertility.
