After videos had been posted and shared on social media showing plastic bottles in the Vardar, the Environment and Physical Planning Ministry, on Tuesday, stated that the appearance of plastic or other packaging waste in the Vardar and other watercourses was a result of the unsatisfactory level of communal services, especially in rural areas. According to the Izet Mexhiti-headed institution, in those areas, the presence of illegal landfills on public surfaces, over whose rehabilitation and control the competence falls to municipalities and their respective inspection services, is evident. The Ministry also stated that together with the State Inspectorate of Environment, it had pointed, in continuity, through the Association of Local Self-Government Units, to the need to regularly monitor the waste management situation and to strengthen the presence of municipal inspectors on the ground. “Currently, the State Inspectorate is at the stage of preparing changes to the Law on Inspection Supervision in the Environment aiming to set up a single system of inspection supervision, which will enable more efficient control in this area”, it added.
