England set for first snow of autumn this weekend as temperatures plunge to 0C

The first snow has been forecast for England – days after meteorologists predicted isolated flurries in central Scotland as September progresses. In an update, snow is now being forecast on Sunday, September 21, in north east England. The flurries could hit the north of England in and around Sunday, with central Scotland still likely to be hit by flurries too. “Two features really stand out, the first is just how much rainfall we are going to see through the weekend across parts of northwest England and North Wales,” said BBC weather forecaster Elizabeth Rizzini. Ms Rizzini was speaking out as maps and charts from WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, showed a blotch of purple patching itself over north east of England, signifying some snowfall could hit. The second is just how warm it is going to feel on Friday and how cold it will be feeling by Monday, so we are in for a plunge in temperatures.” Ms Rizzini said: “We start to see low pressure developing on Saturday, that’s going to change things. So some really strong gusty winds, gusting as high as 60mph to 70mph for southwest England, south Wales, some heavy rain too particularly across northwest England, down through north Wales” She added: “We draw down a northerly wind, so it is going to start feeling a lot colder.” The maps also show temperatures will hover around 0C. A Met Office forecast in the short-term, for Friday (September 19), says: “Cloudy with rain for some, warm sunshine in the south. “Cloudy conditions will persist across west Wales, northern England, and southern Scotland, bringing outbreaks of rain, locally heavy. “In contrast, much of the south and east will see sunny spells developing, becoming prolonged making it feel very warm.”
