US President Donald Trump on Tuesday told world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly that he had ended multiple long-standing conflicts, including tensions between India and Pakistan. “Likewise, in a period of just seven months, I have ended seven unendable wars. They said they were unendable…Some were going for 31 years. Two of them, 31 think of it, 31 years. One was 36 years, one was 28 years,” Trump said during his first address to world leaders at the UN General Debate in his second term as US President. “I ended seven wars, and in all cases, they were raging, with countless thousands of people being killed. This includes Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Congo and Rwanda, a vicious, violent war that was, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he added. Since May 10, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped secure a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a statement India has consistently denied. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following an attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of cross-border drone and missile strikes. Indian officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, have maintained that the cessation of hostilities was achieved through direct military talks without any third-party intervention. Trump also criticised India and China during his address, saying, “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil.” The US has imposed additional tariffs on India as a penalty for its Russian oil purchases, taking total levies to 50 per cent. India has called the tariffs “unjustified and unreasonable”. Trump’s speech was briefly delayed due to a teleprompter malfunction. “The teleprompter is not working,” he said shortly after taking the podium. “Whoever’s operating this teleprompter is in big trouble,” he added, drawing laughter from the assembled world leaders. He added that speaking without a teleprompter allowed him to speak “more from the heart”. Trump later told representatives, “The US is the hottest country anywhere in the world, and there is no other country even close.” He also described the United States as “the best country on Earth to do business,” claiming the economy is “bigger and even better” than during his first term, which he called “the greatest … in the history of the world,” and said the US is “respected again” like never before.
