Emmerdale's Mackenzie Boyd star hints at character's fate with cryptic message

Emmerdale ‘s Lawrence Robb has left fans scratching their heads over the fate of his character, Mackenzie Boyd, after he was rescued from John Sugden’s reign of terror – by none other than John himself. Viewers of the popular ITV soap were recently taken aback when it was revealed that Mackenzie had survived his encounter with the serial killer, as John’s heinous acts came to light . Mack was held hostage in a bunker, with fans left concerned about his future . However after he was saved, actor Lawrence shared a cryptic message on social media. After the dramatic storyline concluded, Lawrence shared a message on Instagram, having remained silent about his character’s future amid speculation he was departing the long-running soap after five years. Posting a brooding image of himself as Mack in John’s sinister bunker, along with behind-the-scenes footage showing how his appearance was created for filming, the actor penned on Instagram: “Locked away and ‘quivering.’ Thanks for all of the support during Mackenzies traumatic time. Was absolutely incredible to shoot, loved every second of it.” However, it was his closing remark that left fans intrigued, as Lawrence mysteriously added: “He’s safe (for now).” Danny Miller, who portrays Aaron, was amongst the first to respond, playfully commenting: “Thank god,” accompanied by a series of eye-rolling emojis. Lawrence fired back: “You’d be lost with out me [eye roll emoji].” Initially, Mackenzie wasn’t too keen on John, but he changed his tune in an effort to keep his mate, Aaron Dingle, content as he tied the knot with John earlier this year. However, Mackenzie’s dealings with John took a sinister turn, aside from the slurry tank sabotage which he may still be oblivious to being John’s handiwork, when his relationship with Charity Dingle, portrayed by actress Emma Atkins, hit a rough patch over her offer to become a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden. After recently admitting his reservations about the surrogacy plan, despite Charity now being pregnant, Mackenzie was asked to vacate his home and move in with his sister, Moira Dingle, by Charity, reports the Manchester Evening News . Feeling sorry for himself, Mackenzie decided to head to London for a party. He accepted a lift to the train station from John and while in his van, Mackenzie stumbled upon a photo album featuring John alongside the man hired to clear out the late Nate Robinson’s possessions. The penny finally dropped for Mackenzie, as viewers are aware that Nate was revealed to have been murdered – but only they know that it was John who orchestrated his tragic demise. Things took a turn for the worse for Mack after he was pursued and assaulted by John. There was a fleeting moment of hope when it seemed that Mack might escape. However, as John smugly stated he’s “always one step ahead”, in brutal scenes, John fired a crossbow into Mack’s chest. Begging for his life, Mack vowed not to reveal John’s secret, but viewers watched as John appeared to strike Mack with a rock. It later transpired that John hadn’t killed Mack, but had him shackled in a woodland bunker, with his health deteriorating. Since then, Mack tried to flee but his taste of freedom was brief, as he was recaptured by John. He found himself back in the bunker while simultaneously, John’s spouse, Aaron, began to realise that John had been medicating him, and started piecing together the puzzle after discovering Mack’s phone in John’s pocket. In search of his best mate, John stepped in and confessed all his chilling crimes to Aaron. Robert Sugden then arrived, but John’s jealousy dictated his actions as he phoned the police to frame Robert before hurling both himself and Aaron over the edge of the gorge. Aaron was placed in an induced coma and John – with less severe injuries – was left pondering his next move to keep his secrets hidden, with indications suggesting his husband could be his next target. However, as the pressure intensified, he retrieved Mack from the bunker and abandoned him outside a hospital before making his escape. Mack has had Charity supporting him throughout his recovery, with a particularly touching scene where he awoke calling out for her, signalling their emotional reunion after being separated for weeks.
