Elon Musk Confirms This Bug In X Algorithm: Here’s What It Means For Your Feed

If you’ve noticed fewer posts from the people you follow on X lately, you’re not alone. Over the past few weeks, several users (including me) have taken to the platform to complain about this issue and now, Elon Musk himself has admitted that there’s a reason behind it. This revelation confirms what many users had suspected for weeks, that the issue wasn’t intentional but rather a technical glitch in X’s content recommendation system. Here's everything you need to know. Musk Confirms Major Bug In X Feed Algorithm In a post on X, Musk revealed that a “significant bug” in the platform’s ‘For You’ algorithm was responsible for showing users fewer posts from accounts they follow. He wrote, “We found a significant bug in the ‘For You’ algorithm that resulted in users seeing far fewer posts from people that they follow. It should be fixed by tomorrow.” New Customisation Setting Coming To ‘Following’ Feed Along with fixing the bug, Musk announced that X will soon introduce a new feature allowing users to have more control over their feeds. He said, “We are adding a setting for your Following feed to see either everything from everyone you follow or only the highlights. That should make the Following feed much more usable.” Essentially, this update will let users choose between seeing every single post from accounts they follow or just the most popular or relevant ones, similar to how Instagram’s “Favourites” or “Suggested” feeds work. The billionaire said this change could happen within the next four to six weeks, though, given Musk’s track record with deadlines, it might take a bit longer. Once implemented, Grok will reportedly process over 100 million posts daily to better curate what users see based on their preferences. This AI-driven system will read every post and watch every video to understand user behaviour and surface content they’re most likely to engage with. It could also give smaller creators a better chance at visibility, a move Musk says will make the platform “fairer” and more personalised. Users Still Complain About Reach Despite Premium Subscription Since Musk’s takeover nearly two years ago, X’s algorithm and visibility system have undergone multiple changes. Premium subscribers, those with the blue checkmark, were promised better reach and engagement. However, many users have recently claimed that their posts are still not reaching a wide audience despite paying for the feature.
