Man guilty in Elgin road rage murder, attempted murder A 26-year-old man has been found guilty in a jury trial of murdering an Elgin man in a 2020 road rage incident on North State Street in Elgin. Dru K. Jarvis, of the 1300 block of Cunat Court in Lake in the Hills, was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed violence, according to a Kane County state’s attorney’s office news release. Prosecutors said Jarvis was a passenger in a southbound car on North State Street on Aug. 22, 2020, when the driver attempted to pull in front of a Mini Cooper. The driver of the Mini Cooper honked his horn, prompting Jarvis to pull out a gun and fire multiple times into the vehicle at the intersection of Kimball Street, the release said. Francisco Trujillo-Uscanga, 41, of Elgin, a passenger in the Mini Cooper, was struck in the torso and died later at AMITA Health St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, the release said. The driver was struck multiple times in the legs. One week after the incident, Jarvis committed a shooting in the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard in Elgin for which he was convicted of aggravated discharge of a weapon and sentenced to four years in prison. Jarvis’ arrest in the second case helped connect him to the Aug. 22 murder, the release said. Jarvis’ next scheduled court appearance is Dec. 3. “This tragic case is a stark reminder of how quickly anger behind the wheel can turn into irreversible violence,” Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar said in the release. “There was absolutely no reason for this shooting: someone honked a horn and an innocent man lost his life.” Elgin man gets 18 years in prison for child sex assault An Elgin man was sentenced to 18 years in prison under deal in which he agreed to plead guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a class X felony. Norman Hoel, 67, admitted that he had sexual contact with the minor victim — a child he knew — between Dec. 2, 2019, and July 8, 2024, according to a Kane County state’s attorney’s office news release. Under the plea agreement accepted by Kane County Judge John Barsanti, Hoel must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He also must serve at least 85% of the sentence and a mandatory supervised release of three years to life after he leaves prison. “This defendant exploited a minor’s trust in order to take advantage of and abuse them,” Assistant State’s Attorney Morgan Wilkinson said in the release. “He thought he could keep the victim silent and evade justice, and he was wrong. The victim’s bravery and courage in coming forward made sure that the defendant was held accountable for his actions and will not hurt any more children.”
