Mike Sailsbery is running as a Democrat, and Steven A. Morris is running as a Republican. The two are competing for four-year seats on the board. The Reading Eagle asked each of the candidates the following questions. Question 1: What characteristics do you possess that make you a good candidate to serve on a school board? Question 2: What is the biggest challenge your district is currently facing and how would you address it? Here are their responses. Incumbents denoted with an asterisk. Mike Sailsbery Party: Democrat Age: 77 Occupation: Retired educator Response 1: I’m a retired educator. My last 18 years as a superintendent. My work experience gives me a unique understanding of public education. I have 14 grandchildren — three have graduated from the Kutztown School District. I served in the Army. I volunteer as the treasurer and bookkeeper at Trinity Lutheran Church. My wife and I chose to move to Kutztown seven years ago and love our community. Response 2: The biggest challenge for the district and all public schools is both financial and personnel. Because of the withdrawal of funding from both the federal and state governments, schools are having to depend on local property taxes now more than ever. Kutztown School District reduced staff again this year to try to meet the budget. There is a shortage of qualified teachers throughout our region. Finding excellent teachers continues to be difficult. Kutztown School District is an excellent district and it will take work and creativity to continue to reach the high expectations of the community and meet the needs of our students. Steven A. Morris Party: Republican Did not provide a response.
